Buy lottery tickets online
You can play the world’s biggest lotteries online from home, including ones from other countries. The usual way is a ticket service that buys an official ticket in the lottery’s own country for you and shows you a scan of it. Here’s how that works, what it costs, and how to tell a safe service from a bad one.

Three ways to play the lottery online
| What you buy | Who pays prizes | Good to know | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your national lottery’s website | An official ticket | The lottery | Usually only for residents, and only its own games |
| A ticket service | An official ticket bought for you abroad, with a scan | The lottery, through the service | Costs more than the ticket’s face value; that pays for the service |
| Lottery betting | A bet on the draw’s result, not a ticket | The betting company | Usually cheaper; check how very large wins are paid |
How a ticket service works
- You choose a lottery, your numbers (or a Quick Pick) and how many draws, and pay online.
- The service buys your ticket from an official seller in the lottery’s country before the cut-off, a few hours before the draw.
- You get proof: an email with your numbers and a scan of the ticket in your account.
- After the draw your ticket is checked for you. Smaller prizes go into your account; for a large prize, the service helps you claim it from the lottery.
How to choose a safe service: a checklist
- A named company with an address in its terms, not just a website name.
- A scan of your official ticket before the draw, not just a confirmation number.
- Clear prices: the price per line, any minimum order, and any fees, shown before you pay.
- Clear prize rules: how prizes reach your account, any minimum withdrawal, and how large prizes are claimed.
- Account fees: some services charge a monthly fee on accounts that sit unused for a year. Read the terms.
- Who may play: the service should say which countries it can’t serve. Playing where it isn’t allowed can void a win.
- Responsible play tools: spending limits, breaks and self-exclusion.
Lottery scams to avoid
- A message saying you’ve won a lottery you never entered.
- Being asked to pay a fee, tax or “release charge” before you can receive a prize.
- Being asked for your bank login, card PIN or ID to “verify” a win by email, SMS or WhatsApp.
- Pressure to act fast or keep it secret.
Real lotteries and ticket services never ask you to pay to collect a prize.
Questions about buying lottery tickets online
- Can I buy lottery tickets online?
- Yes, in three ways: from your own national lottery’s website (usually only for residents), through a ticket service that buys official tickets abroad for you, or through a lottery betting site that takes bets on the result. Which you may use depends on where you live.
- Is buying lottery tickets online safe?
- It can be, if you choose a service that names the company behind it, shows you a scan of your official ticket before the draw, states its prices and fees clearly, and explains how prizes are paid. Never pay a fee to claim a prize you didn’t enter for: that’s a scam.
- Why do tickets cost more online?
- A ticket service buys a real ticket in the lottery’s own country, scans it and keeps it for you, and handles any prize. Its price includes that work. A US Powerball line costs $2 in the US and from about €5 online.
- How are online lottery prizes paid?
- With a ticket service, the service checks your ticket and adds smaller prizes to your account, which you can withdraw. For large prizes it helps you claim from the lottery itself, and the lottery’s own tax rules apply. With lottery betting, prizes are paid by the betting company.
- Which lotteries can I play online?
- Through ticket services: the world’s big draws, including US Powerball and Mega Millions, EuroMillions, EuroJackpot and Italy’s SuperEnalotto. Most services don’t sell a lottery to people in its own country, who buy it locally instead.
