The Biggest PowerBall and Lotto Jackpots in South African History

South Africa's National Lottery has made hundreds of millionaires, but a handful of jackpots stand apart. Here are the biggest PowerBall and Lotto wins on record, as of September 2026.

The biggest PowerBall jackpots

1. R232.1 million, 19 February 2019. Still the record. A single winner bought a manual R22.50 ticket at a small shop in Goodwood, Western Cape.
2. R178.9 million, 20 January 2026. The second-biggest jackpot in the lottery's history, won by a couple with a R15 Quick Pick on the FNB banking app.
3. R167.3 million, 11 February 2022. A KwaZulu-Natal businessman from Ballito won with a R150 Quick Pick.
4. R163.6 million, 21 October 2025. A R30 ticket with numbers chosen by hand, bought on the Nedbank app.
5. R158.0 million, 27 July 2021. A banking-app player from North West.
6. R145.5 million, August 2018. A single winner from Evander, Mpumalanga.
7. R141.3 million, August 2019. A player from Groot Brakrivier in the Western Cape.
8. R135.4 million, April 2020. Bought on the FNB app.
9. R134.3 million, 5 April 2024. Split three ways, at about R44.8 million each.
10. R128.6 million, 2 June 2026. The first PowerBall jackpot of the Sizekhaya era, won by a man from Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal, with a R30 ticket bought at a Boxer store.

The biggest Lotto jackpots

Lotto jackpots are usually smaller than PowerBall's but still life-changing:

• R110 million, 27 January 2018. The Lotto record, split between four winners.
• R103.7 million, 30 October 2024. A single winner who played on the Capitec app.
• R100 million, 3 August 2024. A single winner who bought a ticket at a Pick n Pay store in Gauteng.
• R79.0 million, 18 June 2025. Shared by two winners.
• R65.2 million, 31 December 2025. A player from Colesberg ended the year with the jackpot.

The draw nobody believed: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10

On 1 December 2020 the PowerBall draw produced 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 with PowerBall 10. Twenty players had picked that exact sequence and shared the jackpot, about R5.7 million each. Many people suspected a fix. The draw was checked by independent auditors and the draw-machine supplier, and accepted by the National Lotteries Commission. No wrongdoing was found.

What the big winners have in common

• Small stakes. The record ticket cost R22.50, and several jackpots were won on R15 and R30 tickets.
• Banking apps. Most jackpots since 2020 were bought on a phone, and those prizes are simpler to claim.
• Both kinds of pick. Quick Picks and hand-chosen numbers have both won big. The machine doesn't know the difference.
